Unboxing, Assembly Impressions, and Gameplay Breakdown
Having collected and painted models from every single faction available in Warcrow so far—from the disciplined ranks of Hegemony of Embersig to the rugged warriors of the Northern Tribes and Mounthaven dwarfs—I’ve developed a keen eye for how Corvus Belli scales and casts their range. When the box for the new Red Caps nation arrived on my workbench, I immediately tore into it to see how these chaotic subterranean imps and their elven leaders compare to the rest of Lindwurm.
Here is my initial hands-on review of the material, scale, and casting quality, followed by a high-level tactical deep dive into how every unit in the line functions on the gaming table.
First Impressions: Scale, Sculpting, and Material Quality
Sculpt Scale & Character
The first thing that hits you when holding these models in hand is the distinct contrast in scale. The Red Cap imps are noticeably smaller than the Mounthaven dwarfs, but what they lack in stature they more than make up for in kinetic personality. Corvus Belli’s design team packed an absurd amount of dynamic character into these diminutive frames—sharp ceramic shards, frenzied grins, makeshift weapons, and wild expressions. In stark contrast to the chaotic imps stand the Elves. General Nuada and Anayram are simply stunning. The sleek, elegant lines of their armor and posture create a brilliant aesthetic counterpoint on the table to the unhinged horde they lead.
Material & Cast Cleanliness
The miniatures are produced in Corvus Belli’s Unicool thermoplastic resin. Inspecting the sprues and parts under high-magnification studio lighting, the quality control is excellent:- Zero Miscasts: Mold lines are minimal and easy to clean with a light scrape of a hobby knife.
- Sharp Details: The fine edges on ceramic shards, weapon straps, and elven scrollwork came through crisp without soft spots or air bubbles.
- Durability: The thermoplastic material holds crisp detail while giving slender elements—like weapons or elven limbs—enough flexibility to resist snapping during assembly or gaming transport.
Tactical Deep Dive: How the Red Caps Play on the Gaming Table
The Red Caps bring pure, unadulterated chaos to Warcrow. They excel at momentum, aggressive board control, high-friction troop sling-shotting, and dealing residual strain and damage to force your opponent into making mistakes.1. General Nuada
- Role: Elite Commander & Centerpiece
- Overview: Former Master Artisan and military leader of Gae Assail, General Nuada serves as the tactical anchor of the army. He brings essential leadership, faction-wide synergies, and adaptive buffs to elevate surrounding units. On his own, Nuada coordinates the line; when paired with his advisor Anayram, he transforms into an absolute combat powerhouse.
2. Anayram (Pre-order Exclusive Miniature)
- Role: Elven Advisor & Bodyguard
- Overview: Anayram is dedicated to protecting General Nuada—even from Nuada’s own aggressive tactical impulses. While not built for direct solo combat, Anayram attaches directly to Nuada, granting him extra Wounds and invaluable re-roll mechanics that push Nuada's combat effectiveness through the roof.
3. Plaf, The Enraptured
- Role: Morale & Cohesion Support
- Overview: In an army driven by madness and hyperactive imps, Plaf is arguably the only figure on the field with a modicum of restraint. She functions as a vital support character who articulates orders and shouts instructions to keep troop cohesion intact and morale high, preventing your army from collapsing into self-destructive chaos.
4. Plum, The Slugger
- Role: Heavy Offensive Support ("Tactical Catapult")
- Overview: A goofy giant wielding a massive megabeast bone as a club, Plum functions as the unit catapult for the faction. He can grab allied units with the Throwable keyword—such as Choppers or Bugbowls—and literally launch them across the battlefield directly into enemy lines to bypass choke points.
5. The Choppers
- Role: Light Shock Infantry / Living Ammunition
- Overview: Covered from head to toe in razor-sharp ceramic shards, The Choppers are designed for tight close-quarters engagements. They inflict automatic damage upon engaging enemy units in melee. Crucially, their light, prickly nature makes them prime ammunition to be hurled across the table by Plum.
6. Flamecobs
- Role: High-Threat Infantry & Area Denial
- Overview: Armed with unstable, improvised flamethrowers, Flamecobs dish out relentless residual damage across the line. If an enemy manages to strike them down, the unstable fuel tanks detonate upon death, dealing explosive damage and applying Stress to all surrounding models.
7. Rac, the Greedy
- Role: Opportunistic Harasser
- Overview: Mounted atop a massive giant frog named Raña (or Kuff), Rac is a fast-moving, greedy hoarder. He excels at picking off wounded or isolated enemy units, using his mount's mobility to strike vulnerable flanks before leaping back out of reach.
8. Bugbowls
- Role: Rolling Scouts & Airborne Ammunition
- Overview: Impatient, fast-moving creatures that deploy via Scout rules. Bugbowls execute full-speed rolling charges to slam into enemy formations before the opponent can set up a defensive line. When not rolling, they double as airborne kinetic payloads for Plum's catapult swings.
